Lateral files, typically manufactured in depths of 30", 36" and 42" offer the same protection with the ability to file papers side by side. For the modern age, types of media(cd's, tapes, microfiche, etc.) need an even greater level of protection. Media must be kept below a temperature of 125°F and below a humidity of 80% while paper documents do not start to accrue damage until the internal temperature reaches 350°F. 2 and 3 hour rated fire safe files are best served in highly flammable environments such as chemical plants.
